Do you love competition? Do you love to cook? Do you love local food? If you answered yes to all three of those questions then head down to the South Estes Farmers’ Market to sign up for our first ever Fresh Chef Competition!

I would like to thank Andrea Weigl of the News & Observer and Vimala Rajendran for graciously agreeing to judge this event. I would also like to thank Martha Jenkins of Kitchenworks for her generous donation of a Wusthof knife set for the grand prize.
We will start taking entries for the Fresh Chef Competition this Saturday, May 29th, at the market. For more information or inquiries, please e-mail me at mlardie@gmail.com.
The South Estes Farmers’ Market is held Saturdays from 8-12 and Tuesdays from 3-6 at University Mall, 201 S. Estes Drive, in Chapel Hill, across the parking lot from A Southern Season.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been distracted by all the nice weather lately! Instead of doing my laundry, finishing my homework, and yes, writing blog posts, I’ve been outside working on my (tiny) garden, taking walks, and generally just enjoying the outdoors. I do have some great posts coming up though, so stay tuned!

As you can probably tell from the lack of recent posts, I’ve been pretty busy over the holidays. Work was crazy for me, and then I spent Christmas in Michigan with my boyfriend’s family. Now I’m back in Durham, life is quieting down, and I’m planning lots of great stuff for Green Eats in 2010. Stay tuned!

Dear two or three readers,
I'm working with my friend Tyler (well Tyler is working I'm just nodding my head yes when I like it) on an overhaul of the site. Hopefully it will make Green Eats more accessible and more fun to read. I'm also thinking of incorporating a discussion board into the site somehow, but that may come later. In the meantime I apologize for the dearth of posts, but I do have some exciting things lined up for the next few weeks!

Green Eats is a blog about food.
Where does it come from? How did it make it to our plates? How do we grow it, prepare it, eat it, sell it, worship it? What policies were behind its conception? How can we eat better – for our health and for our planet?
I love food. I love eating food, I love growing food, I love talking about food. I hope that this blog will encourage you to learn more about what you eat. I plan on sharing my thoughts through photos, essays, recipes, and any other medium I can think of.
As always, I encourage comments and e-mails. If you like what I have to say, let me know. If you disagree, even better! Tell me!
(On a final note, while I plan on addressing some of the larger national and global issues surround food and agriculture, there will also being a distinctly local slant to this blog – I live in the Triangle region of North Carolina – specifically, Durham – and I plan on exploring the wonderful food finds we have here and highlighting the incredible local food community that has taken root. Locals are always welcome!)
