Homesteading Goals

2012 May 4

I recently got a copy of Making It by Kelly Coyne & Erik Knutzen, authors of The Urban Homestead and the folks behind one of my favorite blogs, Root Simple. The book reinvigorated my passion for modern homesteading/home ec, so much so that I immediately jumped into the shower and gave myself the olive oil scrub from page 27. A few minutes later, with my skin feeling amazing, I set about flipping through the rest of the book and decided to set some goals for the coming months. Most goals will be ‘firsts’ that I will continue doing once I start, others are larger one-time projects. I’m going to put a link to this post on the sidebar and revisit it each time I complete a goal, so you can join in on the journey with me.

  • Put up enough pickles and jams to last through the winter
  • Order my coffee in bulk and roast it myself
  • Start a compost bin
  • Plant a medicinal herb potted garden
  • Make my own shampoo
  • Make my own deodorant
  • Make my own moisturizer
  • Make my own lip balm
  • Start a nukadoko pickling crock to make nukazuke pickled veggies
  • Make homemade laundry powder
  • Revitalize my sourdough starter, and use it regularly
  • Start learning how to homebrew

Are you looking to establish your own modern homestead? What do you do to remove yourself from the corporate food/retail/supply chain?

    Hi Matt,

I wanted to tell you that my mom just showed me a few weeks back how she makes her laundry powder. She uses equal parts washing soda, borax, and grated washing soap (it comes in bar form you have to grate it). I was VERY skeptical, but it actually does a great job (as well as liquid detergent IMHO) and smells very clean and fresh. Bonus: it costs less than $10 to make.

Also, I have for many years made my own soap. It’s really fun and easy, I just use a microwave to melt the wax and add the natural oils or herbs that I want. Oatmeal is good for sensitive skin.

    Love the blog! =)
