Congressional Republicans: Pizza sauce is a vegetable

2011 November 16

In a clear victory for the processed food industry, Republicans in Congress prevented the USDA from toughening standards for school lunches. Among other things, school districts would still be able to classify pizza sauce as a serving of vegetables.

I’m not even sure where to begin with this. First of all, the GOP clearly put corporate interests (under the guise of “less government regulation”) ahead of concerns for childhood health. Hell, they put those interests ahead of science. Common sense even!

I could go on for pages over the insidious influence of corporate food in our public school systems, but I’ll spare you my rant. Suffice it to say that this is a step backward for childhood nutrition, and I can only hope that parents out there speak up at the local level to make sure their kids are getting a lunch that is actually healthy.

Of course this won’t come as a surprise, but a few years back I read an article about a school in a low-income community that had a helluva time getting kids to graduation. They decided to focus on nutrition, and slowly phased out the crap “food” in favor of real food. Whaddya know, kids’ academic performance improved, attention spans appeared to lengthen, and it started a cascade of positive effects. The cost was roughly $1 more per child (or a little less–I just remember it being around that amount) over the faux food budget. Imagine if we could stop giving Cargill and Monsanto tax payer money and instead funneled it into schools to help them afford real food? GRRRRRR

Well, all that and the simple fact that a tomato is fruit, not a vegetable. Seriously though, I don’t know whats worse – that they are so stupid they actually believe that bs or that they are so intertwined with big business interests that they choose to ignore facts.

Absolutely disgusting. Reagan tried to get ketchup approved as a vegetable for school lunches in the 80′s. I wonder if they will try to qualify the coating of a corn dog as a serving of vegetable next.

Its absolutely disgusting how bought the government is. I also love the entire idiocy of the fact that a tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable. Whenever I have a child, I’m going to send them to school with packed lunch.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go get my daily serving of “vegetables” by downing a few bloody marys.
