Whitted Bowers Farm – NC’s only Certified Biodynamic farm

Dec 08

Last week Rob Bowers of Whitted Bowers Farm in Cedar Grove, NC came to speak to our class about permaculture and biodynamics. Rob and his wife, Cheri Whitted, moved to North Carolina from California with the intention of starting a biodynamic fruit farm and have succeeded in becoming the only Certified Biodynamic farm in North Carolina and one of only two in the entire Southeast.

With the help of Professor Will Hooker of NC State University, Rob and Cheri laid out the plans you see above and according to Rob the farm essentially looks the same as these original plans. By using permaculture design and biodynamic practices has become locally famous for things like their heirloom melons and U-Pick strawberry patch. You can find Whitted Bowers at the Eno River Farmer’s Market in downtown Hillsborough on Saturdays and the Carrboro Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays, or you can visit their farm in the spring to pick your own strawberries.

Permaculture and biodynamics are two increasingly popular forms of sustainable agriculture and numerous books have been written on both subjects. I plan on addressing both topics here on this blog at a later date, but in the meantime you can check out these resources to learn more:
